Pacific Medical Systems Ltd, sponsored The 1st International Heart Failure Meeting held in Hong Kong, February 21-22, 2004.

Over 14,000 new Heart Failure cases are reported in Hong Kong every year, a trend that has been continually increasing over the last years!

Over 700 physicians and allied professionals from Hong Kong, China, Western and South East Asian countries, involved in the diagnosis, treatment and care of individuals suffering from heart failure, met over the weekend to share views and ideas on the latest advancement in the management of heart failure, including pharmacotherapy, device therapy and monitoring for heart failure. The two-day program included plenary lectures, announcements of the latest clinical trials and various live demonstrations.

Pacific Medical Systems was proud to support this important, well attended meeting and to exhibit USCOM & Cardiac Science range of core products, helping in the diagnosis and management of Heart Failure patients.

USCOM an innovative cardiac output monitor demonstrated in a recent case comparison with thermodilution, its ability to evaluate the cardiovascular reserve in heart failure non-invasively. Serial simultaneous haemodynamic measurements were made using both methods. There was a mean difference between methods of 0.09±0.58l/m. This case demonstrated favourable comparison of CO measurements at rest and during exercise, using the USCOM 2D independent Continuous Wave (CW) Doppler approach and thermodilution

The Cardiac Rhythm Module (CRM) from Cardiac Science may provide yet one of the biggest steps in improving the survival from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) which is the main cause of death in Heart Failure! Comprehensive literature review of 113 published reports involving 26,095 patients show a dismal survival statistics of 15.2% (survival to discharge). Included critical care areas. These poor survival statistics despite huge investments in Telemetry systems, Patient monitors, ACLS training, Crash carts with manual defibrillators, Paging systems etc. have hardly changed over the last 30 years!

Maimonides Medical Center, the 3rd largest independent teaching hospital in the US, has experienced significantly improved outcomes in its hospitalized patients who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest since their deployment of 104 Powerhearts in its cardiology wards last August. Their report shows Cardiac Arrest Survival Rate of nearly 100% from use of Cardiac Science's Powerhearts. The Powerheart CRM is the ONLY system which can analyze the patient’s rhythm and in automatic mode, deliver therapy without human intervention, providing life-saving defibrillation consistently and automatically within seconds! The sensitivity in picking up shockable rhythms is 100%!
