Pacific Medical Systems sponsors the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine Scientific Session 2005

The scientific symposium on Emergency Medicine, held on 28th – 29th of October, was organized by the Hong Kong Society for Emergency Medicine and Surgery, the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine and the Hong Kong Emergency Nurses Association.
With the theme of the meeting being “Recent Advances”, the USCOM non-invasive Cardiac Output monitor was unveiled for the Emergency physicians.

We are also honoured to invite Dr. Brendan Smith, Director of Critical Care at Broken Hill Base Hospital, Australia; delivering 2 lectures on the "Rapid Evaluation of Haemodynamics in Early Goal Directed Therapy in the ED"  and “Rapid Evaluation of Haemodynamics in the critically ill patient by CW Doppler Ultrasound Measurement of Aortic Minute Distance".

Over 250 local and overseas participants were present for this exciting 2-day event.
A hands-on, haemodynamic workshop was conducted during the lunch time session, where Dr. Brendan Smith demonstrated the new USCOM features including the real-time calculation and display of Systemic Vascular Resistance and how these together with Stroke Volume and Cardiac Output can be used in the clinical decision making in the every day ER environment. The well attended workshop created a lot of interest and excitement in the USCOM device. The ease of use was further illustrated during the Free Paper presentation by Dr. Jenny Lam MY, from the Prince of Wales Hospital Hong Kong, titled “Emergency Physicians Can Reliably Assess Patients Cardiac Output Using Non-Invasive Ultrasonic Cardiac Output Monitor (USCOM)”. The study found an excellent inter-assessor correlation (r=0.93, 05% CI (0.88-0.96)) and concludes: “Emergency physicians can be trained to obtain reliable cardiac output estimations upon emergency department patients with the USCOM over the course of 15 patient assessments”.

Also on display was the newly launched Esaote MyLab30CV, a high-end performance echocardiography system which fit neatly into a compact, highly portable package; as well as the Cardiac Science range of AEDs and CRM.
