REPEL-CV, Bioresorbable Adhesion Barrier - Asia Launch

Repel-CV, a novel, cardiac indicated, bioresorbable adhesion barrier,
manufactured by SyntheMedInc., USA
was launched at the 1st Asia Pacific Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, held in Bangkok, from November 1-4, 2006.

Around 600 local and overseas participants registered for this first of its kind meeting. Many of the delegates who visited our booth commented very favorably on the Repel-CV Adhesion Barrier. Repel-CV was particularly well received for its easy handling as well as being transparent, allowing surgeons to view and examine the heart while the patients chest maybe left open for some periods in the ICU prior to closure, and the fact that it fully resorbs within 28 days, leaving no residual materials in the patients body.

Adhesions are known to pose a significant challenge in redo-surgery, affecting most pediatric/congenital cardiac surgeries, and between 15-20% of adult cardiac surgeries. Difficulties include visualization of the heart and clean access, tedious & risky adhesion removal, excessive bleeding, prolonged anaesthesia exposure and even related mortality. Adhesions often contain vascular structures and prolong surgical time anywhere from 30-90 minutes. In addition to the associated risks from these adhesions, there are considerable cost additions in manpower, facilities, medication and anaesthesia.

The Repel-CV acts as an effective, temporary barrier between tissue surfaces, blocking transmission of fibrin and with such significantly reduces the development of fibrous, vascular adhesions. The Repel-CV should be considered for all cardiac surgery patients.
