Basic Course in the Use of Ultrasonic Cardiac Output Monitor Workshop at Prince of Wales Department , Shatin, Hong Kong

The workshop titled “Basic Course in the Use of Ultrasonic Cardiac Output Monitor”, is the first of its kind to be organised by the Hong Kong Chinese University Department of Emergency on the use and clinical relevance of non-invasive haemodynamic monitoring. It was held at the Prince of Wales Hospital on 18th April 2007.
Participants included Emergency Physicians from various Hospitals in HK, as well as Physicians from Shenzhen and Guangzhou, PR China.

Pacific Medical Systems Ltd was honoured to sponsor this workshop and invitation of Dr. Brendan Smith, Associate Professor of Charles Sturt University, and Specialist in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care at the Bathurst Base Hospital, NSW, Australia.

The following topics were covered in the morning session:

  • Rapid evaluation of Haemodynamics in the ED
  • Beyond the Swan-Ganz-Haemodynamics in the 3rd millennium
  • Non-invasive haemodynamic monitoring in children and septicaemia patients
  • Experience of using USCOM in a local ED (PWH)
  • Case Studies

What the Participants found most interesting is the interpretation of the various Haemodynamic parameters obtained from the Uscom monitor, and how they allow safe and rapid management of Preload, Afterload and the Contractility.

Following the lectures an interactive hands-on session was arranged where participants were able to practice the non-invasive scanning technique for both the Right Heart Output via the pulmonary valve access and the Left Heart Output via the suprasternal notch aiming towards the aortic valve.
