Scientific Symposium on Emergency Medicine 2007, Hong Kong

Pacific Medical Systems Ltd was privileged to be a co-sponsor of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine SSEM2007, titled “Innovations and Technologies in Emergency Medicine”. It was held at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in Aberdeen from 17th–18th October. Over 300 local and overseas participants were attending this 2-day event.

Pacific Medical Systems Ltd showcased the USCOM device, a non-invasive, beat-to-beat, Cardiac Output Monitor, based on the proven Doppler technology.

For a 3rd year in a row, Pacific Medical Systems held a workshop on non-invasive  haemodynamics monitoring, titled “Non-invasive Haemodynamics Monitoring in the ER: Back to the Basics”. Guest speaker Dr. Brendan Smith, Associate Professor of Charles Sturt University NSW Australia, presented case studies and examples on how to use and interpret the haemodynamics status with the use of the critical parameters such as SV, HR, CO, SVR. The different parameters obtained on the USCOM can provide a much better picture with accurate information on the Preload, Inotropy and Afterload status and response to therapy. He also presented some of his preliminary work on the Inotropic Index, which may provide a good indication on whether inotropy improvement is required at a given point during the patient’s treatment. This was followed by live demonstrations and hands-on session for the participants, highlighting the ease of use and sensitivity in tracking even small changes in circulation.

“Non-Invasive Hemodynamics Monitoring – The Future Vital Signs in Resuscitation?” was presented by Dr. M.K. Tam from the Hong Kong Chinese University. He reminded us to make use of the sometimes forgotten parameters such as SV, HR, CO, SVR. These parameters are the building block for the vital signs we do currently rely on – BP.  However, BP is the end product which will only change when our autonomic response system cannot cope any more. Accurate SV, HR, CO, SVR parameters are now available with the USCOM Non-invasive monitor, allowing the physician to more accurately and more safely manage patients to a desired goal, also referred to as Goal Directed Therapy.
“The USCOM non-invasive haemodynamics monitor allows ED physician not only to recognize and diagnose critical illnesses early, but also to pro-actively target resuscitation and therapy to achieve specific hemodynamic values associated with improved survival.”

The recently released USCOM version 1.7.2 shown at this meeting included an interactive trending display for multiple haemodynamic parameters, allowing for better understanding and interplay of pre-load, contractility and after-load parameters which are driving the cardiovascular circulation.

Also on display was the latest range of Cardiac Science AEDs with the newly recommended 2005 ILCOR Guidelines. As well as the GE Logiq-e portable laptop size Ultrasound system. The high performance portable ultrasound system covering multiple applications (from Cardiac to Obstetrics/Gyn) and transducers required in the Emergency room.
